Alarm on the Motor

In another post on this board, someone mentioned an alarm and that when you hear it that the engine should be shut down immediately.

Did I understand this correctly, is there really an alarm or was this person metaphorically speaking about the alarm?

any alarm, you should shut down and find cause. not all manufacturers use the same alarm codes.

low oil alarm is a beep every 30 seconds. beep......................beep...................

no oil alarm is a beep every 1/2 second or so.beep,beep,beep

overheat alarm is a constant beep.beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

Most engines have some sort of warning system to warn you of various engine operating conditions that may have crossed the threshold. Over temperature, over reving (also caused over speed), oil injection related issues are just a small sample of things that can be alarmed. The year make and model of the engine will determine what type of alarm you have. So yes -- this is a very real situation. Older engines typically had just an overheat audible alarm. If you have a newer engine and hear a beep when you turn the key on, that's the alarm self test to tell you its working. Not all systems operate that way.
