Engine flooding with watermixed oil

Hi, first let me apologize for my "not perfect" english :), I am from Sweden

My problem is as follows.

I had just put the boot in the local sweetwater lake. (after a long winter)
The engine had been fixed for the winter using anti-freeze liquid as I always do. But this year the freezeplugs (or whatever they are called) had popped out.

Well, I refitted them and tested the engine and everything seemed ok.

Anyway, after about 5 minutes I recognized a petrol smell. I looked under the hood and saw that everything was covered in a water/oil mixture. (as shown on the image). I shut the engine off and got another boat to take me to the harbor.

You might have figured out what my question is by now :p...

What might have caused this, and what should I do.

I have tried asking in the swedish forums, but the only answer I get is that the block might have frozen and cracked. That is a possibility, but I want a second opinion.

The engine is a OMC V6 4.3L (205) 1987. Cooled with seawater.

Hoping that someone has a answer.

Best regards.

Howdy, (Your english is probably FAR better than my Swedish!!;))

Sorry you have these problems.

The first opinion is probably accurate. It appears the oil/water mixture came out of the oil breather tube that goes from the starboard valve cover to the flame arrester.

If you check the oil level is it many liters higher than normal? Obviously the oil is mixed with water.

Simply pouring anti-freeze into the engine usually does not mix it sufficiently to prevent the water inside from freezing.

It appears you'll have to replace the engine and probably both manifolds.

Sorry,

Rick

Thanks for the quick answer, yes, the oil on the stick is also mixed with water.

I heard someone mentioning that it could be the oilcooling device that has frozen?

The oil cooler may be broken as well, but if that was the only thing that froze and broke then the oil in the engine would not be over-full with water and oil mix, in fact the oil would just leak out the oil cooler and exit with the cooling water out the exhaust. The engine block in that picture has a major internal cooling water jacket problem in my opinion.

Is it possible to replace the block with one from a matching carengine? or are there differences between them?

Or, is there some way to repair the crack in the block (without loosing reliability)

Ayuh,.... I agree...
You probably didn't Drain it before you antifreezed it....

well, honestly, I might have forgotten to drain the system...

Just for the 'fun' of it, are there any other possible causes, lightly or not, just so I can check them before starting to tear the engine apart?

ok, thanks for all the help.

If someone would like to come to Sweden and fix my problem, I'll buy lunch ;)

I'll try to document the damages and post them for further references.

Re: Engine flooding with watermixed oil

Sorry to hear about your problem, I have the same engine, it's a 1988 in my old Four Winns. When I winterize it I always drain everything first, and then fill up the engine and manifolds with low tox antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors. If you're in freshwater you may not really have to bother with antifreeze at all.
About the engine, like others said you will have to replace it and maybe the manifolds, but if you did the suck the antifreeze up the outdrive (lower unit) method, then the manifolds would have gotten antifreeze in them and could be OK. I know that they are original, though becasue they have the same sticker on them that my originals did. If they are OK that is really good because the one piece ones are really hard to find.
I'd consider getting a new marine long block. Start out new and you will be in good shape. A truck based engine from a Chevy Blazer S-10 may work if you can get the carb fuel pump to bolt up.

Re: Engine flooding with watermixed oil

I have just one more question, Is it possible for me to get a complete engine from, lets say a Cevrolet Astro (the same engine as I can understand) and move the marine-parts from my engine to that one?

"Are Chevies very popular in Sweden,..??"

No, not like the volvos and saab's , but they do exist. Especially in the junkyards :p... The Chevy Astro seems to be the most popular model. I found about 10 engines within 1 hour travel.
