90 HP Force Runs 2 Hrs Then Quits

I had an occasional problem last year with my 90 Hp Force because once it warmed up I had pull up the fast idle to keep it running when it was in neutral. I had to move fast when putting it in gear by pushing back down the fast idle then kicking it in gear with a little gas to keep it running. It sounds complicated but it was managable and ran great once we got going.

This year started with more of the same so I replaced the fuel bulb thinking it might be leaking. Last weekend we went tubing for at least two hours on 3 seperate occasions and the boat ran great up until it died completely. It was a dead die, kind of all at once.

The boat does not restart until several hours later. Then it starts and runs great again for a couple hours. Wierd!

A mechanic at the local marina says he is backed up for weeks but it sounds to him like the Ignition Coil.

I did notice that the fuel ball never got firm before I replaced it and is still a bit spongy with the new one. The new one is a cheapo one from Wal-Mart.

Any thoughts here would be sincerely appreciated.

Motor serial number is E122991. Not sure what year it is - 1995 I think.

Thanks

im wondering if our fuel pumps are designed correct. I replaced my fuel diaphram kit six years ago but wouldnt think its bad already. If you havent had yours done do it! Get ordering one now $15 bucks easy and pie to do. Your problem almost would exclude the coil lol dont go back to that dealer.

When motor dies will the starter still crank the motor just not fire? What color is the stator? Red or Black?

Next time it dies on you like that & won't restart, why dont you check to see if you're getting spark. That should confirm if a coil is bad (which doesnt sound like the case). Yank a wire off a sparkplug, hook it up to a spark tester, and have a buddy crank while you look too see a spark. Do it that way for each cylinder. If you're not getting spark at any, chances are it's something past the coils such as the switchbox, connections to it, etc.

If the problem is a bad fuel pump, I wonder if priming that bulb while a buddy cranks the engine might work like a manual pump and get fuel to the engine.

A car of mine used to do the same exact thing you described when it got hot enough and got worse as time went on. Turned out to be the ignitor which is similar in nature to the switchbox. The diodes and transistors used in some of these ignition systems just can't take the heat and tend to break down over time. I can't shake the feeling this is your prob.

You wouldn't have a plugged vent on your fuel tank. This would cause a vacuum in your fuel system witch over time would cause your engine to starve for fuel and shut down. Once the vacuum has stabilized the engine will start again.

Well I took it to another dealer and he said it was leaking water into one of the cylinders. He replaced the head gasket and said it did not help.

His opinion is now that the motor is junk.

I took it back to my lake and now it will not run at all.

Guess it is time for a new motor.

spongy bulbs are often a sign of bad needle valve in carberator. It might be that all you ever needed was a $10 carb rebuild kit.

If you plan on having a dealer service your engine then maybe you should sell your Force. Dealers will often do more harm than good when working on Force. They still charge you full price though.

mine did the same thing and it was the cdi box getting overheated and the gel SLOWLY melting out of it, look for SMALL amounts of goo and or a long shot is your rings could be getting REAL tight after completely warmed up, hence the re-start after cooling down, it might need reringed, check your compression----------------jon
