Starting in driveway?

So I get to "watch" this boat for the next 2 years. It's a 1989 Fisher SV2 running a Mariner 45 with "Oil Injection". It may run, or not. I don't have any real experience working on an outboard.

So, how do I go about firing it up (trying at least) without burning something up. I assume that there is a pick-up port for cooling water, right? I think I still have a fake-a-lake that I used on my old wakeboat. Can I make that work.

I just got the boat Thurs. night so I haven't had a chance to check it out in the light. I'm gonna go poke around a bit right now, look for the f-a-l too.
Thanks,
Brian

trash cans full of water work well too. Or another smaller tub put up on blocks. Just make sure the water intake ports (on either side of the lower unit, nearest the transom) If it "pee's" water out the back when you start it, you're good. If not, cut her off right away.

I'm not sure what "watch" the boat for 2 years means. (?) It belongs to someone else, and you've agreed to store it until they get back, and you are free to use it? If this is the case, I'd want to know what happens if something breaks when you're using it. Are you responsible to repair it? My Dad did this for a friend of his who didn't have room to store his boat anymore (moved to condo)... store it, and welcome to use it. After 1 season he didn't like the feeling of using/fixing/worrying about someone else's "stuff". So he offered to buy it, his friend agreed and gave him a good deal. If he had happened to be holding the wheel and the motor went kaboom, I'm not sure what would've happened.
