Hi, I have been exploring this forum for a week or two now and just now decided to join and throw my question out there. I have a '69 Boston Whaler 13 Sport with a 95 40hp Johnson on it. It was my aunt's and it sat for a few years before she gave it to me. I am a car mechanic so I know how to get my hands dirty and figure things out but I really don't want to mess up this motor on things im not sure about.

On to the problem. While the boat is running it will idle fine untill put into gear then up till about 1/2 throttle it will run fine. When I try to get on plane and stay there it will run for about 5 sec. then bog out. When I first started working on the boat I cleaned the carbs the same way I would on a car and put them back on. The VRO system was also bad when I first got it so I saw on this forum that I could replace the pump with a non VRO pump which I did but it was a used pump. So what my plans are is to order a brand new fuel pump and I would like to know which one I should be buying for this motor. Also I want to order carb rebuild kits and have both carbs rebuilt by a professional boat mechanic. A link to carb kits and fuel pump needed would be great. Also I don't want to go back to a VRO setup as I figure if I have to carry spare oil around with me incase it fails I should just mix my own.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any answers given. Sorry for such a long post.

As compared to a automobile's carburetor, the carburetors on that engine are extremely simple and I'm sure you can handle them. Just take pictures and make notes so that the linkage setup isn't forgotten.

When you had the carburetors apart, if you did not manuallly clean the brass high speed jets that are located in the center bottom portion of the float chambers, do so. They have 1/4x20 threads and are removable for cleaning. They do become somewhat clogged from sitting and that would result in the problem you describe.

Carb kits, by engine model number or year, make, and horsepower are available at any Evinrude/Johnson dealership, and most likely at NAPA. Let us know how you make out.

There is nothing too difficult about rebuilding the carbs being a mechanic I think you can handle it. Spend the money instead on an oem manual. Other than that check your fuel tank vent and intake screen. I assume hoses were ok as you replaced the pump.

Being a mechanic, you can probably get Sierra Marine aftermarket kits from NAPA at a discount. If you prefer the "real thing", and I do, then you can get them direct from BRP at http://shop.evinrude.com/

Stick a fuel pump pressure gage in the line between the f pump and carb and see what you get.

Re: long time boater having mechanical issues

What pressure should I be getting out of my pump. Also which pump should I be switching to (part number) to remove the VRO system. I see a 3 prong pump (the one i stole off the 75hp rude in the back yard) and a 2 prong pump (my motor has a good mounting surface with the extra hole for that pump). Thanks in advance. Also thanks for the napa suggestion they do have my carb kits in stock and I will be having those rebuilt this week.

Re: long time boater having mechanical issues

thanks guys that helps alot.. ill be putting the boat in the water tomorrow and testing it. i got the fuel pump hooked up and i found out another problem may have been that my fuel solenoid for direct intake injection was left wide open so i may have been flooding it out in the top end so hopefully tomorrow it will run better than before and i can get the trailor fixed

"fuel solenoid for direct intake injection" that is called the primer, replaced the choke. this is operating position.

I saw that in another thread but couldn't remember the name for it. My red needle was sticking out towards me if the primer was in the same position as that picture.

the lever is in line with the body, back over the solenoid. is normal running postion. the pushing in on the key activates it.

Re: long time boater having mechanical issues

Well, I took the boat out yesterday to see if the fuel pump being put in the right spot and that primer solenoid being turned the right way would make a difference but it didn't. So I guess im going to be rebuilding the carbs. Yay for me
