q-jet troubles

I have a 1986 Searay 23. 350 chev engine, mercruiser drive. I have a lot of trouble with hard starts (I have to crank it for 10-20 seconds after it is warmed up) and flooding (also after the engine is warmed up). It has a quadrajet carb. the part number reference says that the carb is from a 1975 marine engine. I have looked up information regarding tuning and adjusting this carb. It looks as though it is pretty complicated. I usually can accomplish most of the mechanical things I attempt. I have found charts for the measurements of all of the adjustments however the exact application for carb # 7045586 is not on the four pages listing many applications that I have found. Any help for the proper adjustment measurements for that Carb. would be appreciated.
I also would consider changeing to a different Carb. or even a injection system, (if it is practical and reasonably affordable), and if there is a general oppinion that it is commonly recomended..

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mark

Re: q-jet troubles

Several things...
First, welcome to the forum! ;)

Second, QJets are notorious for leaking out of the bottom of the fuel bowl. There is a plug there that usually needs to be epoxied.

I personally am a big fan of the Edlebrock carbs - very simple and easy to use. They usually work well right out of the box with little if any adjusting. I know a lot of people like the qjets, and I had one in my car for many years (It's the car in my avatar). After years of hassling with it, I put an edelbrock on and never looked back.

The qjet is a spread bore and the Edlebrock is a square bore, so you might need an adapter... or not. Some manifolds have provision for both and have enough "meat" for there not to be any vacuum leak problems.

You can buy a brand new Edelbrock marine carb from Jeggs or Summitt Racing fairly inexpensively.
