Marine radio?

I have my marine radio mounted in the dash so I don't ever take it out of the boat. Over the past few years I have had to replace it 3 times because although the radio holds up to the weather the microphone doesn't. I am thinking of just splicing a mic into the thing with some type of quick connect fitting and just taking the mic in after every trip. Has anybody else tackled this problem?

The mic and cord unplugs off my unit with a connector.

With many newer (an older) radios the cable does not detach because of LCD panels, all the controls, etc. But there are male and female mic connectors that could be used. You would likely need more than one however because of the number of wires involved. Perhaps another connector (military grade) type with more pins is available but you won't find that at Radio Shack.

I take my radio out most of the time. My mike also has a screw on plug. I can tell you that radio are like all electronics and summer heat will shorten it life. Same with depthfinders and GPS units.

I set mine up with some quick disconnect mounts and the Loran C and depth finders are 27 years old. The VHF radio is outdated and 24 years old but working like new.

Takes less than 5 minutes to remove. My son does it while I flush motors and wash the saltwater off the boat and trailer.
