Hi,

Im very new boat this boating thing but really looking forward to it and looking to gain as much info as I can.

My query is how can I find out the year of my engine?

Also there is a "Locking bar" at the base of the motor, is this meant to go through the engine mountings to lock the motor into place or does it have another use. The Holes on the outboard mounting and the boat mounting do not line up correctly.

Im really sorry if these are lame questions but Im a complete novice at this.

Hope someone can help.

1990 Belguim built engine the bar that your talking about sets the tilt of the engine as well as lock it down in neutral and rev. If the mounting holes don't line up you will have to patch them and redrill them in the right position.

Thanks very much for that.

As a novice Im a little wary of redrilling holes in the mounts, is there any other way of adjusting this.

There is what I can only describe as suspension arms behind the engine, is there any way to adjust these in order to get the holes to meet up, they are only about 5mm from meeting, I can see the holes from the sides but only half the hole if you know what I mean.

Also how are these engines regarded, do they tend to suffer from any major problems.

Again, Im a complete novies so I hope these questions dont sound stupid, but hey you gotta learn somewhere.

First I did not mean to drill the mounts, patch the tramson and redrill it. If you try to elongate the holes to line up they will leak and cause water to get into the boat.

James, the transom is the back of the boat where the engine is attached. No need to be sorry or embarrassed we where all there once upon a time. Bob

I have uploaded a couple of pics.

The first pic shows the locking bar, it should go in the second hole down I think but is a few mm out.

The second pic shows the mounting at the back of the boat.

James the first photo is the tilt pin, when the engine is shifted into fwd gear the dogs that lock the engine down will release and the engine can be tilted up. When the pin is adjusted properly the cavitation plate (the flat surface above the prop) should be about parallel to the bottom of the boat, after test running the engine you may want to readjust the tilt to raise or lower the nose of the boat.
