no fire from coil

just bought a new to me boat i had a bayliner w/ out board.. now i bought a 1985 celebrity calais 18' w/inboard.. dont know anything bout this motor it says on the valve cover model# mcm190...displacement:224cid...serial #a365629.. on the stern drive it has mercruiser 190hp..any info would be helpful about this motor..(4cyl).. problem is no fire from coil i took test light and with ingnition on i have power from the + and - on the coil.. im guessing the points and condensor are bad. no spark there either.. although my son turned the ignition on while i was turning the screw on the points and i felt a good jolt.. am i right or could it be something else?

First things first.

1-Get a factory manual year specific. Seloc second best-claymor garbage.

2-Compression check all the cyl. plugs out anyway.

3-Do a full tune up via the manual. Points, plugs, set dwell, timing, check them wires real good, older boat.

3-Check the battery cables, they good? Clean all the connections, grounds also.

4-The starter wires clean them good too.

When you go to start it, if it were my boat i would use a external tank, and clean all the filters. One at the fitting to the carb, in the fuel pump. And water seperator if you have one.

post what happens if a problem we will help you, better minds here than mine

ok wife picked up points and cond. i got home and put em in and the motor fired up took to lake for an hour and it ran like a champ.. the guy i bought it from said it needed another carb .lol the whole time it was the point and cond going bad on him...cant wait to spend the day on the lake...

i was on the lake with my kids checking out the boat for the first time and i guess i had the bow trim way up when i slowed down the bow went straight up and scared the daylights out of us. one son thought we was filling up with water my other son looked in the motor compartment no water . i hit wot got to plane (very quick) pushed bow down then slowed down worked fine....hahaha now i know how to scare people that go with me in the boat.. cant wait for that either....
