Peddle boat hull gash - how to fix?

I have aquired a peddle boat for free. It has a small gash in the side just below the water line. Does anyone have any idea of what to use to repair it? I don't know what it is made of. Not fiberglass for sure. It is some type of plastic - vinyl or PVC?
It looks like silcone was tried once but it is peeling off. I was thinking of cleaning it really well and trying hot glue. That stuff sticks to everything.

I think I'd use 3M 5200 sealant/adhesive rather than hot glue. On waxy sorts of plastic I've found the hot glue doesn't stick well and can be peeled off fairly easily. (experience from fixing kid's toys)

Note, even the "fast cure" 5200 takes quite a while to cure (a day or so). The regular takes something like a week.

good luck

It all depends what it's made of. If it's a polypropylene plastic, like some of them are, it's possible to weld them, using a stick of the same material and a propane torch. You can google polypropylene welding and find resources. You might also check in your area and see if there's someone who does it.

Polypropylene is kind of waxy feeling stuff. Nothing much sticks to it, except more of the same when melted. It's pretty popular for small boats like your pedal boat.

I was also thinking along these lines. I remember as kid seeing a toy where they welded plastic parts togther using a stick of plastic in a toy drill as a sort of welding rod. Heat from friction of the spinning rod melted it together.
Is there a way to detrmine what type of plastic it is? The waxy feel seems about right.

EDIT
I found this a welding site.

2. Take a small sliver or shaving of the material to be welded and light it with a match, observe the flame and smell the smoke.
On PVC blackish smoke and acrid smell
On Polyethylene no smoke, the material drips like a candle and also smells of wax
On Polypropylene no smoke, the material drips like a candle and smells of burnt oil
On Polyamide no smoke, pulls to form thread, smells of burn horn
On Polycarbonate yellowish sooty smoke. Sweetish smell
On ABS blackish smoke, soot flakes, sweetish smell

When I was a kid we found a pedal boat with the same type of damage in the trash. We made it seaworthy with my dads propane torch and two whammo frisbys, just melted them onto the damaged area. cheap frisbys didn't do it they had to be whammo frisbys. We built the area up by melting them and dripping the plastic right into the leaky spots, one of those childhood memories I'll never forget we had lots of fun in that boat.

That is sort of what I was thinking of doing. I just need to find the right patch material. I'l start burn different plastics and see if I can get a match.
The reason the boat is free is because it washed up on the beach last fall and no has come by to claim it. So it's mine now. After the patch I am going to slap some paint on it so it looks different in case they see it floating around in the lake.

I have the similar thing. Mine looks like this. I was going to try contact cement and some sort of rubber patch like an inner tube or hypalon. But I like the melted frisbee idea as I have lots of em but then it's in the seat and might get uncomfortable! And you got a good deal on yours, mine cost me $20!
