ok i feel really dumb asking this but i was under the impression that my 1965 johnson 6hp is a 4 stroke but i watched a video of one on youtube and it looked exactley like mine and was titled as a 2 stroke. ive been having trouble getting her started and not having oil in the fuel would be a good reason not to run. could someone please clear this up for me thanks

it is a 2 stroke motor requiring a 50-1 fuel/oil mixture, use TC-W3 outboard motor oil. have you check compression and spark on both cylinders. has this motor been sitting for some time, and you are now putting it back i service?

If you thought it was a 4 stroke you really need a Service Manual and Owners Manual before you touch it, Matthew.

They are fairly simple engines, but you have to do everything right or they will refuse you service.

Well at least an owner's manual. I don't think you are ready to get into heavy service procedures. You can get the owner's manual from outboardbooks.com

If you have no 2 stroke oil in the gas then it could be a blessing that you did not get it to run. No lubrication will cause untold damage to your entire motor. If in doubt, ask before acting !!!!
