1986 Evinrude 15 hp can't find idle screw

I have a 1986 Evinrude 15 hp E15RLCDE.

I am trying to set the idle speed. It is currently about 400 rpm and seems very slow. Anyone know the correct idle speed? The engine runs much better at 1000 rpm, and runs fine at full throttle.

The motor is connected to a remote throttle / gear lever. It seems that I should be able to adjust the idle by adjusting the throttle cable position, but it is already maxed out. I'd have to move the throttle cable so that the cam follower on the carb is about 1/4 way up the cam to get 1000 rpm.

Often the motor cuts out at idle and is hard to start. I usually have to move the throttle about 45 degrees off top center to get the motor to start, but at this position the transmission is engaged, and the cam follower on the carb is about 1/4 of the way up the cam.

I can't find how to adjust the idle speed. In the manual, it says that there is a nylon screw on the port side of the motor, outside the cowling, just below the fuel line, but mine does not have this screw.

I know that the cam follower attached to the carb is for synchronization not idle speed, and the idle mixture knob near the choke and pull cord is not the idle speed adjustment either. Where is that little devil? I've looked everywhere!

By the way, I have installed new plugs, used new fuel, and disassembled and cleaned the carb three times already.

I contacted my local marina service shop but they are too busy to look at it for a couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance.

it should be attached to part of the moving linkage. but i don't have a manual for that motor. it really sounds like it need a total link N sinc.

I can't find any screw attached to the throttle linkage.

Does adjusting the idle speed involve moving the retainer ring that the throttle cable is attached to (the big ring under the flywheel)? If so, I don't see how I could adjust it because the throttle cable holds it in place.

Any ideas?

Do you know your model number?

If so, go to the link below. Do a search until you get to your motor and they show all the scematics online and you can look in the parts list, find your "idle screw" on the parts list, look for it on the schematic and hopefully, correct your situation. Its really easy to use and gives great information in regards to every schematic you will probably ever need for your motor.

As far as your idle speed, and you can probably call your local dealer for that information but 800 rpm's is usually a good starting point....

Re: 1986 Evinrude 15 hp can't find idle screw

Thanks to all who replied so far, but I am still stumped.

I have the service manual - it says to look for a nylon screw outside the cowling, port side. Can't find anything there. Can't understand how a screw there would rotate the throttle ring since the remote cable holds everything in place.

I tried the exploded view parts diagrams - there is nothing labeled "idle screw" and the diagrams show the tiller control while I have the remote control so there is a small difference.

There is a small white gear at the base of the "vertical control shaft" that, on my motor, appears to connect to nothing. I could imagine that if something turned this gear, it would turn the control shaft and change the engine speed. However, the remote throttle cable keeps anything from turning.

It almost seems like I need a throttle control cable that has about an inch longer stroke. All the control cables I can find online, though, don't list their stroke as if it were an important parameter. They just list the overall cable length.

Anyone know of a way to extend the throttle cable? I don't mean to make it overall longer (jacket and cable core), just to make the cable core move about an inch further from the fixed stop attached to the motor.

I will keep trying -- "never give up, never surrender"
