Ok, I had to buy all new wires for this 1959 evinrude lark 35hp. An uncle gave it to me and told me it runs. I have the seloc repair manuel for it and have been trying to rewire it with the advise of a guy from a marine repair shop from the way they did it in 1959 to the new way. Not sure what that means but am going by some diagrams they have in the back of the manuel for this motor.
I hooked it all up with a new key switch, new starter solinoid, and new voltage regulator. I try and start it and do not get a spark from grounding the spark plug test.
I have fresh gas tank and hose bulb.

I believe my problem lies in wiring. when I trace the 2 black wires from the magneto and test the ohm reading it shows they are connected. So I run 1 wire to one side of the cutout switch, and back to the M on the key, and I run the 2nd black wire from the magneto to the other M on the key. I read thru these forums and it said that when in the off position the magneto wires should be connected which they are, but in the on position they should be separate, well- they are still connected according to the ohm tester.

I have tested the cutout switch, it still has the connection inside separate.

Any thoughts on what to troubleshoot next?

Thanks for any help

So what you are saying is that when you connect the meter leads to both wires it shows continuity? That is correct and the way it should be. You have a circuit through the coils and breaker points.

What the book is saying is that the switch connects the two "M" terminals together to kill the ignition. That connects the coils and points together in a circuit the same way that your ohm meter is doing. It probably won't run with your meter connected in there either.

have you pulled the flywheel to see if anything is out of place under there?

Re: 59 evinrude 35hp wiring

I have hooked it up according to the wire diagrams and tried to run turn the engine over. The starter works, the choke solinoid works, but the engine does not start up.

I am saying that when the key is in the off position the meter reads both M's on the key having continuity, when the key is on the on position, the meter still reads that both M's have continuity.
I am guessing that is what is keeping the spark from sparking through the plug.

Any ideas of how to fix this?

for now unhook both M wires. Leave them unhooked and see if you have spark. It sounds like your key switch may be bad. In the on position there should be no continuity to the m wires.

Yes, let's start over.

1. Disconnect both wires from the M terminals. You should have continuity between the M terminals when in OFF position and no continuity when ON.

2. Connecting the two black wires together kills the ignition. Separating the two black wires allows ignition.

3. That is what the switch does. Got it now?
