my buddy replace the oil pump on his 1989 60hp evinrude because of a rough running & excessive smoke condition, now it wont start. we checked for spark & are only getting spark through the bottom cylinder, switched all three coils & they all seem to be ok but only on the bottom cylinder! Any one have an idea what to check next and/or what he may need to re-visit from the new oil pump replacement which he had to add a 4th wire to (purple). Thanks in advance for any help.

unhook the wires you installed for the VRO and recheck spark. If there is no change then the problem will mst likly be the power pack as that engine has 3 sensors and the chance of loosing 2 are pretty slim.

disconnected new purple wire from oil pump & got spark back (all 3 cyl) now it runs rough, might be from mixing oil 50:1 with gas to cover for new oil pump as directed by oil pump installation instructions, thanks for all your help, I'm closer but not done yet. I'll keep you all posted, I welcome your suggestions....
Thanks Otter, Tash & Spinner!
