The tilt/trim stopped working. The solenoids "click" when I press the T/T up/down switch. I removed the solenoids and was able to tilt up and down by using a jumper wire. Does this mean the solenoids are bad? I tapped on them and re-installed. Still not working.

Where do I get replacement solenoids?

Napa might have them if you have nothing else local, or order here on iboats.

You might want to pop one of those solenoids open and look for solder breaks, I re-solder them all the time in my volvo. Heat and vibration tend to break the solder joints. A small blade screwdriver will pop the cover off, theres not much in there at all.

Strange that they both failed though, I'd clean all the plugs connecting them with CRC (napa) elec spray cleaner first. Probably just a bad ground or something universal like that.

Are the relays different from the solenoids?

Solenoids are a bit different than relays. The relays are two position switches and solenoids are one position switches. The relays reverse the polarity on the 2 wire PTT motor, and solenoids place current onto a three wire PTT motor.

If the PTT unit works when jumpered, it is likely the relays or their wiring is bad. I recommend you pull the relays and check the wiring with a voltmeter.

Update: Tilt/Trim won't work 1998 Evinrude 130

Update: Tilt/Trim won't work 1998 Evinrude 130

Okay

I cleaned every electrical connection from the T/T motor I could find (including the "hidden" ground behind the junction block where the relays are located). Still not working.

So I carefully removed the cover from one of the relays. It was clean, no corrosion noted (and nothing to solder..). I used some fine sandpaper and cleaned the contacts. When I went to reinstall it on the engine, I accidentally pressed on the relay and the T/T was activated.

The puzzling thing is that when the T/T switch is pressed, the relay behaves exactly the same way as when I manually activated the relay except nothing happens - no activation. It clicks over to the same position.

Maybe the relay's are bad and I just don't know it yet. (And I hate spending $$ for electrical parts I can't return...)

Any further suggestions from the group?

Fuse is OK. I can tilt/trim by bypassing the relay with a jumper.

I've installed new relays. The T/T still doesn't work.
What have I overlooked?

Is your switch bad? Is your unit to trim and tilt the unit a rocker switch in the throttle handle?

I believe the switches are OK. There are 3, one on the motor itself, one on the throttle and one mounted at the bow.

When any of the switches are pressed the relay's "click" but the T/T motor does not come on. The motor works - see previous posts about the motor working.

Perhaps a broken wire somewhere?

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Tilt/Trim won't work 1998 Evinrude 130

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Tilt/Trim won't work 1998 Evinrude 130

There were two problems found:

The blue trim wire passing through the engine cowl had chaffed and was grounding out. A similar problem existed in the gear-shift where another trim switch is located.

Many thanks to Fox's Trolling Motor in Mobile Alabama for diagnosing and repairing this problem.

I was gonna say the relay plugs are dirty but they found the problem, gremlins in the wires.
