stiff cables on throttle and steering

I pulled my old faithful Lowe Pontoon boat out for a run and found that the throttle cables and steering cables are REALLY stiff and scratchy. most of my other boat experiences have been with newer oats and they never had this issue. this wonderful old beast is about 30 years old but I am not sure how old the cables are as I got it just four years ago. 90 HP Johsnon rund like a champ. is there a grease kit for stiff cables or another remedy? or is it just time to change them out for a new set of cabling altogether? anyone have any experiences with this??

thanks in advance..

Re: stiff cables on throttle and steering

I used to work in a Motorcycle Shop and an old trick is to remove the cables, take a quart plastic bag and tear a small hole in one corner, insert one end of the cable through the hole in the bag so that the cable jacket is just slightly inside the bag and then seal the bag to the cable jacket with a rubber band. Fill the bag to just above the cable jacket with 30 weight oil and then hang the whole thing from the top of the bag to a nail on the wall. Place some newspaper on the floor under the end of the cables. Leave it hang until you see oil dripping from the other end of the cable. This assures that the entire cable is lubed.

If there are any freyed areas on the cable it should be replaced.

Good luck with the old girl!
