You need to re-gear the upper.Put o/d cooler on it. Drive oil resivoir will help.
It won't last long if you plan on drag racing quick/sudden acceleration will break it fast.
Like bondo said it won't last long.
Go to a Brovo or a Volvo O/D.Jerry

Ayuh,... In so far as they both bolt into the Same Hole in the Hull......

Other than That,.... They're Very Different drivelines, from the front of the motor, to the end of the drive....

Re: Alpah 1 take more than 300 HP?

im looking at buying a bayliner 2252 with a 5.0 merc it has the alpha 1
but i would like to have more power i already have a 4 bolt main 5.7 i would like to replace the 5.0 with but with 350 HP build. so i just need to also swap out the whole outdrive with a bravo 1. and it should bolt right up to the 5.7 though the hull same as the Alpha?

I would look for a boat with a bravo drive and bad or troubled motor. You could also look for a boat ready to go with the HP you want and sell the motor you have. Would probably be cheaper in the long run.

Re: Alpah 1 take more than 300 HP?

with all due respect to the very knowledgable guys on this forum, you should easily be able to get by with the alpha drive and the motor you are looking to build. I have had one behind my 406 small block for 13 seasons with no problems. This engine is easily 350+ hp with a lot of torque. The reasons it has lasted this long is probably attributed to not "flooring it out of the hole", a driver shower, and faithfully changing outdrive fluid every season. I have my outdrive apart right now because the prop shaft seal has a leak and the gears look good as new.
