2.5 ltr dipstick length?

I just acquired a 1987 Renken 1750 that has a Merc 2.5 ltr engine. I believe the dipstick is the wrong length since it goes all the way to the bottom of the oil pan. Does anyone know the correct lenth of the dipstick? I drained the oil and it was still showing oil on the dipstick, but I think this is because the dipstick is laying on the bottom of the oil pan. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated thanks.

Thanks Don! Now I just need to measure and cut if necessary. Does that sound normal for the dipstick to go all the way to to the bottom of the oil pan?

Also, could it be that the tube that the dipstick goes into is short? Would you happen to know how long the tube that come out of the block? I have a feeling I will be draining the oil one more time this weekend and refilling with 4 quarts.

Thanks,
Ryan

No, no spec on that. But I sure couldn't imagine anyone cutting part of the dipstick tube off.

Re: 2.5 ltr dipstick length?

I was finally able to work on the boat again. The dipstick was definately hitting the bottom of the pan and about 1 inch was laying on the pan. I pulled the dipstick out and cut it down to 12-1/2" long from where the dipstick stop. My full mark is approximately 1-1/2" from the bottom of the dipstick which equals 11". Does this sound similar to anyone elses 2.5 ltr mercruiser?
Thanks ahead of time.
