Johnson 70hp 1977- Weep Hole Location?

Hey folks, just picked up said motor. Runs like a top...no perf problems. However, I noticed the two holes below the cowling were not shooting water, so I replaced impeller and seals without incident. Took her back out today and still no stream. I also put fingers and head and could hold them there for 4 seconds or so.

My question. Is anyone absolutely sure this model is supposed to expell water from that location or prop? The mechanics at my shop were not too sure. I am getting normal two stroke smoke from that area...

Best peace of mind I have ever bought.
I have never had a motor that didnt spit at least a little water out the relief ports. But if its not hot, its not hot.
I feel a lot better knowing exactly how hot my motor is.

First, you won't see any water out the exhaust until the t-stats open up.

Second, on the muffs you won't see much anyway. Sometimes placing your hand over the exhaust will get it to spit more.

Best test is to just measure the temp of the head, as previously mentioned. Touch test will work good enough in most cases.

I got a infrared thermometer at Radio shack for about 20 bucs. It's also good for checking wheel bearings and idler pulleys on the lawn mower.

Thanks All. There is a harbor freight just around the corner so I will p/u the laser gun today. Does anyone know what surface temp should be (or not exceed) and what temp should open t-start?

i have run a 1977 70 hp johnson for and never seen aweep hole yet you can see alot of water coming out around bottom of cowling though

I'm going to go-ahead and install the by-pass by tapping into the water jacket at the top of the head. I ordered the parts and it seems pretty straight forward - thanks to the photos provided in the post.

I had an old Force burn-up on me one time, and I've been cautious on overcooking em ever since. That motor was never the same, even after the rebuild.

I will let you know how it goes....
