my '81 merc 115 is loud, doesnt seem to knock or anything just really is a noisy ole engine when going down the lake, sounds like she is screaming, I have heard a Johnson 88 run on the water and it is a lot less noisy at speed, just wondered if this was normal, I have heard other boats and when I look it is an old tower of power six screaming away, just wondered, thanks again, seems to me they have a distinct sound to them, anyone else notice this?

Yep. I like it. On my lake the old people complain about the noisy jetski's and the gold Glastron. :)

All Merc inline sixes sound like you describe. One of the reasons for them making the transition to 4 stroke technology was the difference in sound output, and of course the fuel eco. But, other dude may be right, what RPM are you seeing on the tach? Shouldn't be over about 5000, otherwsie you may be underpropped.

Well, as Clams Canino said, they'll "run and sound like a raped ape at high RPMs!"

Older Mercs often had a liner on the wrapround. It disappeared from the inlines 6s around the time the ADI models came out. I thought it was a cost cutting issue. I found an older wrap, with the liner, and stuck it on my 1984 115hp. It did reduce the overall racket coming from the engine. However I did start having issues with several switchboxes burning out.

Perhaps you could glue some carpet underlay or foam to the inside of the wrapround, avoiding the area where the switchboxes are. Beware, if it gets loose it could get injested

Had an inline four before my current 90hp inline six and the difference is an order of magnitiude. Give it a few hundred rpms off idle in the water and it sounds like a nice, throaty V8. When it's opened up on the water and really running, it just terrifies me. My next motor will be a more modern, quiet motor, but this thing sure gets some looks - and frowns from dealers who tell me i'm boating with a time bomb and they wouldn't take their family out on the water with it. Ugh - that's another topic.

The inline 4s(75, 80, and 85hp) post 69 or70 had a silencer on the carbs that really shut them up

wow lots of replies on this one, I do not want to make it less noisy I just wanted to make sure this was just a characteristic of this engine, its cool to me if its loud, just so its getting me up the lake I dont care, about the time bomb thing, are these engines known to be a time bomb, who can afford a new boat or new motor for that matter, they are ridiculous high, I am just fishing with this boat, I have a mercruiser 3.7l 165 in my other boat and it is pretty quiet, but I know that is a 4 stroke and that is comparing apples to oranges, the motor is covered up in that boat, but anyway love the ole merc its on an old Ranger bass boat I got to fish with, great little boat, just wish I could iron out that bog out of the hole and we will be about perfect

try disabling the enricher valve, maybe, other than that clean the carbs and make sure all the fuel lines are good

Mine has the liner in the cowl. It's kind of like fiberglass insulation in a plastic cover. It is not substantial IMO, but better than nothing. I thought about putting some carpet insulation in there but I'm worried about heat and fire. My inline 6 is loud also at WOT. The "tower" is so high that the noise comes right toward your head. There is a lot to be said for inboard engines :D.
