OK, i absolutely love the friendly banter with regard to the stringer outdrive. I am trying to find out if omc 302 motor can power a mercrusier outdrive. I know all of the adaptations that need to be made as far as the transom the steering, the shifting and so on. I am curious about the actual motor. Is there some way to connect the outdrive shaft to the motor. In other words, can i re-use the motor?

Re: Stringer Conversion

An engine is an engine, but you're going to have to find all of the other accessory dress from a mercruiser. Manifolds, bell housing, driveshaft coupler, etc, etc. You'd be much better off just buying a boat with a mercruiser already in it. Not to mention, the hole in the transom is much larger for an OMC, you're going to have to replace the transom and cut the appropriate size hole making sure that you align it properly. Alingment is critical with the mercs as there isn't really any play between the engine and the universal joints. If you don't get it dead on, you're going to go through gimbal bearings like they were candy. Just my two cents worth.
