Questions....I have a 1965 15ft Starcraft..Is the 50hp Tohatus weight (205 lbs) to much & how you think it will handle on the Starcraft. Right now I have 1966 40hp Evinrude with CMC tilt & trim on boat runs great just wanted more power & newer remote. How is the sound level on the 50hp & what kind of milage are you guys getting out your 50hp. Any other information I wecome.
PS: What is a fair price to pay for motor & controls...the 66 is for sale & the CMC tilt / trim if I get the 50hp

I think it's too much for the boat, but that's just an opinion. Sound level and mileage vary depending on RPM but in general, it's as quite as a 4-stroke at mid range, a little louder at an idle and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference at WOT. Fuel consumption is better than any four-stroke up to mid range and then becomes the same at WOT.

Do you think the 40hp would be better..they are the same weight.
I understand one can detune the 40hp & make it a 50hp. What do I lose if that was done?
Thank you for your reply.

It's the hull I would be worried about rather than the engine itself...The 50 and 40 have a different ECM and it would run over $1000.00 to convert one to a different hp.

The hull is aluminum & stern has been rebuilt. The dealer gave me price total$48000 for complete installed & the 40 detune would be $200 less. I think that a good price...what you think... what does ECM stand for & what could happen to the hull....I'm thinking the 50hp as $200 is not much more. I boat on the Missouri River & going up river might have need for a bit more hp & won't have to open up all the way.

Thanks for your imput

The price is really low and I would jump on it. ECM stands for electronic control module which is the puter that runs the engine. I think that a hull that old needs to be looked at very carefully by the dealer to determine if it can stand the pressure put on it by the engine.
