i have a volvo penta stern drive 1989 engine. the runs well but the throttle is giving us trouble. sometimes the boat won't go into neutral and at other times it won't go into reverse. recently the boat would go forward in nuetral. after talking to many folks it sounds like the cables need adjusting. does this sound right?

Re: throttle trouble?

feel your pain

Got one that just dies if you try to put it in gear. Waiting for help too.
What I've been reading on other post say it might be the upper shift cable adjustment or could be the lower shift cable, This seems to be a common problem. Hope I get it figured out ... Good luck

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.....

I'd sooner think that you're in need of New Cables, more than Just Adjusting......

Volvo doesn't use upper and lower cables. That is a Mercruiser and OMC thing for drives with dog clutches.

Disconnect the shift cable at the drive under the back cover. Remove the props and start the engine on muffs. See if you can turn the shift mechanism by hand while running. If you can do this easily, you have cable or helm control problems.
