Cooling working?

I finally swapped in a starter and got my 86 force 85 hp started. It started on just a few turns and idles reallly smooth. I had the water muffs on with enough pressure that I had a good bit of water squirting out the edges of both muffs but I did not get water spitting out of anywhere not the two holes or the exhaust fin when it was running. What is a quick and sure way of testing if the water pump is working before I put it in the water. I read about the pee hole mod. Could I just pull that plug off and expect to see water squirting out the top of it? Please let me know.

Thanks
Renny

Re: Cooling working?

that would work but i would not do it for long its suppose to be a restricted hole .. you might have a bad water pump and or thermostat .. if you have to guess i would spend the few buxs it cost and replace them just for piece of mind ..

Re: Cooling working?

i'm assuming your 86 is the same or pretty close to my 84. at low rpm, the water sprays out the two exhaust ports? unfortunately, w/ mine, i have to submerge the LU before the water sprays...something about back pressure happens - experts know that stuff. the point is i never start my motor w/ muffs! they don't work like most other motors on this model force. i simply wont take the chance of blowing the head gasket, but that's just me.

Back it down the ramp and start it in the water. See if sperts water then. I would put the tell-tail on it ,then there is no question if its pumping.

Change out the impeller every season .

Thanks so short of that I'd have to submerge the outboard into a garbage can or something with equivelent volume correct? I plan on adding the tell tale. Will this work.

Thanks

Re: Cooling working?

When you have it on muffs in the driveway, as long as the water comes out of the exhaust fin, your are all good. You can also simulate the backpreassure by covering up exhaust with your hand, the idle relief should start spitting water out at that point. If you get no water from the exhaust fin, then it is likely your impeller is shredded and you will need to replace it.
