My 94 Johnson 175(glera) idles fine, in or out of gear but when I push on the foot throttle it sputters and dies.Carb and throttle are in sync. When I checked for spark it was fine on all 6 cylinders til I give it some throttle then the starboard side looses spark. If it was the shift switch it would not start at all, correct ? Does this mean the power pack has gone or is it the stator? Going to test the coils next. Any input would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

it could be one of the power packs, you also have a shift interupt switch, that kills 3 cylinders, to make shifting easier. the neutral safety switch would not let it start. http://www.boatpartstore.com/page35.asp

Sorry to jump in here but I am having sort of the same problem.

Mine does not die but can't get over 2500 RPM?? Seems like someone has disconnected the that switch some time ago?? will it run fine like this with out it, as that what it has been doing?

Thanks

Curious, lose spark with throttle?

I'd start looking very closely at the timer wiring for any chaffing, possibly grounding once moved from idle timing position dragging against the enginecasing, shorting and not triggering the ignition module.

check your high speed stator output . and it could be your shift box but it sounds stator to me . swap your stator leads and see if it moves to the other side

Re: No spark to starboard side of motor. PLEASE HELP!

UPDATE !!!!
-Disconnected grey plug on the port side of the power pack and engine will rev up with the foot throttle and I have spark to both sides.
-Tested shift switch and it was fine. When I pushed on pin it cut the three cylinders, and when released the spark came back.Resistance test (good). There is one common ground off the switch and one power wire which is split to 2 plugs. Anybody know why the two plugs? One to pack and other to ignition I guess? One wire does not have any continuity with switch in or out.
-(Charge coil testing)Manual talks of a 4 pin connector on the starboard side of the pack but is actualy a 6 pin. Had no voltage output off of the BRN/YEL and BRN/WHITE pins when connected to the BRN pin. Should have 150 volts. Is this telling me my stator is bad and why does it run with this condition.
- ground test for charge coil was good
-resistance test between Brn-White and BRN Wireis suppose to indicate 100-1200 ohms. Had 0 ohms
-continuity test between ground and the previous wires showed 0.
What is the shift interupter switch. Is this another name for the shift switch on the starboard side of motor I already tested.
ANY IDEAS ON MY FINDINGS. And sorry for being long winded, just so many details. Thanks Jay
