Re: johnson seahorse 6 lower unit removal

I cant find any drawings for an 83 although that's what the number says it is right enough.
I've got an 84 longshaft (sail version) Nothing holds it up on there (but i do have to remember to take the extension off with the gearbox.) the '83 4.5 and 7.5 both look the same as mine (I wondered if there was something different with the shift rod, but no.

Earlier models pre 1980 have a joint in the shift rod that accessible when the LU is dropped slightly

I reckon its just the drive shaft not coming away from the crankshaft.

Its only held at the bottom by the impeller key so with a bit of brute force you will pull the drive shaft out of the LU and damage the pump housing so you'll need a new one but IIRC it is in the kit. But take care the key does not drop into the gears.

Worth replacing all the seals while you have the box off IMHO.

BUT
When you do get the LU off make sure you can get a good flow up the water tube from a hose.

I'll bet the grommet at the top of the water tube will have closed over the end. That's a power head off job to sort that out. Recurring problem for me.

A right PITA as they say

Having just ripped apart my 4hp evinrude .....the shaft was attached to the power head pretty good the O ring just below the spline failed and water was able to get in the spline LOTA rust. Mine droped about 1/2" and I was scared to damage things but gave it a good tug and it finally came out now I will replace the seals on top and bottom.

Grease the splines on the top of the drive shaft.

Re: johnson seahorse 6 lower unit removal

thank you all very much,a very slight prise and it dropped out.no damage to anything and i have run a hose through the water pipe and it flows perfect!(thanks)only problem is i cannot find the impellor pin anywhere?i have removed the prop and shook the gearcase but no sign?
due to the date of engine not being listed?i had to strip out impellor to match it up(as i had a choice of two)maybe i can now match it up with a manual.
