mariner magnum 40 electric problem

Hi i am new in your forum..And i am from greece.So excuse me if i dont speak or write very well.I am a mechanic automobiles.
I buy a outboard motor "mariner magnum 40hp 4cyl. and now i cheking out if it works good.I have a problem that the motor works very well and all is fine the motor don't sent power to the baterie.I don't know from boat motor's but i think that if the motor is running she must charging the baterrie because if she doesn't do in a few our's the batterie will be emty...
I want to ask you
1.The motor should charging the baterie ?
2.And if she do then do you know what can i chek...

My complements to you sir. Your English is very good. your engine does not require current from the battery to run because the ignition system is powered by a magneto system. The battery is required only for starting the engine and to operate accessories. If you have access to a voltmeter, start the engine and measure the battery voltage at about 1500 RPM. The voltage should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts. If it is less than that, the charging system is not working. If it is not working, chances are the regulator/rectifier is defective.

ohm the two yellow wires that come from under the flywheel x1 scale should be 0.01to0.03 is a good stator.if good set meeter to amps put between red wires from voltage reg to starter solenoid depending on witch stator you have 6 amp or 9 amp at idle 2 to 3 amps crack throttle should rise.

Thank you very match for your istructions.I have chek the baterrie whith a voltometer when the engine is running and the voltometer stay's at 12,7 just like the engine is off.So for this reason i ask you ...I speed up the engine to 4000-5000rpm and the voltometer stays to 12,7...
I am going to check and the two yellows wires you tell me and i am coming back to tell you...

O.k. i check the 2 yellow wires who you tell me and when the engine is off say's me 0.02-0.03,when the engine is runing it doesn't say anything...Then i try to check the red wire with abps but i don't unterstand exsucly what red wires you tell me...If it is the two wires that coming from inside if i see well it mast be coming from altenator and the one goes to the central + and the other goes to the wires that going to the ignition.I check this two.Both of them don't give me anything from amps they give me 12,7 volts just like the batterie but amps nothing...

Can you post a foto of the side which is the wires you would help me very mach because i thing that i may put wires wrong.I bought the boat and the engine 1 year before and i fix from the begining all the boat so i had take of the engines and now when i put the engines again on the boat maybe i put any wires wrong..First off all i tell you that i put the large wire + from the battery to the engine where is a lot of smaller + wires near where is begin the wire which goes to the starter.And the - of the battery i put it on the starter in one of the four terminals..

The red goes to the + terminal on the rectifier and the yellows can go on the other 2 it don't matter which one. It sounds like the stator (alternator) windings test good so heres the test for rectifiers

ok looks like stator is good if yelow wires read 0.02 to 0.03 when they are unhooked motor not running.where you put the +battery wire there will be small red wire that goes back to a box where the two yellow wires hook up .disconect small red wire and put meter where you opended the wire . with motor running you should get some reading

Good morning and thank you for your foto it help's me very match to understand what you mean ,because us i told you English is my second language and i can't understand what means specific world's (I know specific world's but only in greek).
Today i check again the two yellow wires i unhooked and check it without turn on the engine and again say me 0.01-0.02 ohm.Then i check the small red wire i unhooked and i put the polymeter to 10amps and i put the one end to the small red wire and the other were the red wire was hooked i turn on the engine and the amps meter don't say nothing was 0.00...So what is your instructions it is the rectifier (this is the English name of part i think) that has the fault ?

yes rectifier is bad just one note i thought the greeks invented the modern language we americans just put our twist on it.way to stay with it.

Thank you very match you help me a lot..Tomorrow i'm going to buy and change the rectifier and i hope that all will work fine.Thank's again.
One more question and i finish can i buy from this site the part(rectifier) ?
You sent part's to Greece ?
And if you sent how can i pay ?

Or else i may find out where is mariner-mercury servise in my country and go to buy the part from there...

Hi again I went today and bought from the mercury-mariner in Athens the rectifier i hooked up and the engine is fine it gives me 13.6-14.0 volt's.Thank you very much for your help.
I want to ask your help and another problem that i have.The rpm meter doesn't work's.Neither before work's but i had the hope that when i will fix the stator-rectifier it may work's because it is electric.But now which i fix the rectifier.The rpm meter doesn't work.Do you know what can i check ?

Thank you very match for the link.I check it and all is ok but the rpm meter doesn't work's tomorrow i will buy a new rpm meter and i hope that all will be fine.One more question do you know which is the maximum rpm for this engine ? And which is the prefer rpm to go traveling ?

Mercury says 5200 for the 40HP but the 50HP which is the exact same engine is 5800 RPM and thats where we run them.
