Hello All.

The steering is frozen again on my 1994 Evenrude 48 SPL. This is a recurring problem since the boat is used exclusively in salt water. Anyone know where I can get a replacement tilt tube that is made of stainless?

Thanks

Re: 48 Johson Tilt Tube

The lubrication requirement is to grease the steering ram every 30 days in salt water use. The recommended grease is waterproof, OMC/BRP Triple Guard Grease. That has kept mine working smoothly since 1983 - all salt water use.

A lot of folks are under the mistaken belief that the fittings on the forward side of the tilt help with this problem, but they have nothing to do with it and that lubrication cannot reach the steering ram.

The replacement tilt tube, # 321511 is listed as SST, available at any BRP parts dealer.

Personally, I would clean it up with a 16 gauge bore brush on a drill and follow the recommended grease treatment - at least 'til the end of the season.
