Does anyone know an easy procedure to synchronize a merc 1350? (70-71 in line 6) I've tried the methods in several manuals which prove to be dangerous at best. Is there any easier method? Thanks--sjake

Re: how to synchronize a merc 1350

i have a seloc manual. it says to adjust timing with load in lake. idle speed timing is already set and was easy. me hanging on the transom of the boat while trying to adjust is proving to be difficult. any suggestions would be quite helpful. thanks..

I have someone sit in the drivers seat for restarting. Then tie it off to a pier real good. Its not too hard to do it that way. If you have a "L" shaped pier back it in and sit on the pier while making adjustments.

First, you need to study this writeup, that info in the Seloc is Bum Dope!

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=128495

You'll notice that you don't need to hang off the back of the boat to check total spark advance.

You just take all spark plugs out except #1, advance the throttle until the distributor hits the timing stop, and with a timing lite attached to #1 spark plug wire, crank the engine over and check timing. Adjust spark advance accordingly.

Note that the gearbox must be in in Fwd to advance the throttle far enough to put the distributor against the timing stop. Of course, the starter won't work unless the shift is in Neutral. So, you'll need to turn the ign to "ON" then jump the solenoid to get the starter to turn.

This is easy, just run a wire from the battery-side terminal of the solenoid to the small terminal which has a yellow wire connected to it.

Anyway, the writeup should answer pretty much any question you may have about doing the Link 'n Synch on your Merc, if not give us a holler...........ed
