1986 90 HP Johnson VRO - Premix

We have a 1986 90 HP Johnson VRO. For the second time in four years, the mechanic says we need to replace the oil pump. [Everytime he says it, he tries to sell me a new motor]. I've read that this can be avoided by premixing the gas and oil on a 50:1 ratio. How hard is it for me to disconnect the oil pump? Thanks.

The factory Service Manual has detailed instructions on how to disable it, and is a very good investment for a lot of other reasons.
