I have a 7.5 Ted Williams outboard that runs for about 5-10 seconds then dies. It ran for 3-4 days just fine. Aside from running rich. I have noticed that fuel leaks out of the carb bowl from the spring loaded screw. When i try to start the motor i have to advance the throttle all the way and make sure not to pump the fuel line. and like i said it runs for about 5 seconds or so. If i start it without the propeller engauged it will run a little long about 10-15 seconds. The only things i can think of would be too much fuel or the spark plug is on its way out. any ideas how to fix the carb? is it the float or jets?im not to experianced with carbs and i dont want to screw it up.

Sounds like an Eska.If it was mine and I didn't have a clue about carb repair
I would sell it as described or part it out and apply the money toward an Evinrude/Johnson 5,5.5 6,7.5 or 8 hp outboard much smoother ,quieter, easy to repair, and parts much easier to find.routine parts back to the early 50s are available some right here on iboats.

fixed it. it was the spark plug. i am trying to order a carb kit for it. i have rebuilt 1 set of carbs on an old motorcycle and looking at the diagram for these carbs i think i can handle it. I just dont have any experiance besides the 4 carbs on my old suzuki. which are way more complicated and there is only one here so i dont have to sync them like i had to before.

I also had a question are water cooled outboards of the same horse power faster?

Nope. Especially Eskas.

If you put your 7.5hp on your boat, then switch it with, say, a Johnson 6hp, the Johnson will run your boat faster.

I've done it, and it's true. Besides, the 2-cylinder engine runs smoother, quieter, and hardly vibrates at all. That can't be said for your Eska-based one.

They're fine, when they run, but they're not nearly as nice to use, and they definitely aren't faster than an equivalent 2-cylinder water-cooled outboard.

thats what i figured. i just rebuilt the carb... it took me about 15 minutes and i really am not experianced but these carbs are so simple. it used to take about 5-7 pulls to start now it starts on first or second and doesnt leak gas.

Ok i took the boat out. it ran great for about 10 minutes. but then it kept dying out after that. it will run for a while with the choke all the way out. then it dies and i push the choke in and it will run again for a minute or less. what is causing this? do i need to adjust the float for the jet?

Is the fuel tank vent open and clear?

i didnt take the welch plug out when i rebuilt the carb. it was being stubborn. should i take it out and spray carb cleaner in there? the carb was pretty much spotless inside though... guess it wouldnt hurt to do that.

The water pump doesnt seem to function on the motor. could it be over heating that is causing this?

I changed the gap on the plug and it runs longer and a lot quiter but still stalls when it warms up. The water pump is actually working really well. what is the gap supposed to be on the plug? and would the carb float being at the wrong height cause this?

have you tried adjusting the float? and the mixture screw? i am giving up on this motor and going to sell it to put money twords a johnson or something of that calibur. even when this motor is running well its slow. i got dusted by a 4hp evinrude on the river the other day...
