jumped timming

hi guys
i have 1988 omc 2.3 that i just put in a new motor .i have been breaking it in took it out this weekend .it ran good for about an hour .i was running it at different speeds .not for long for each speed like the manual said to do .the last time it ran it was at full throutal and started it back down and thats when it souned like it was backfireing down and stopped .then it wouldent start backfire through carb .does it sound like timming? looking for imput from anyone that can help thank you for any help thank god for the helpful boaters they towed me in two hr .

You can check the timing, but it is doubtful......
Backfire through the carb is generally either a tuliped intake valve or a lean fuel condition.......
I vote lean fuel condition.....
A simple compression check will rule out a tuliped valve.....;)

thank you for the input .i realy have no idea .i am just shooting in the dark .i have had problums with fuel before.and probley still do. i cant work no it until this weekend .thank for all the help :confused:

It may have not started because it was not getting any fuel. I would check to make sure it is getting fuel.

Points closed up.Bad points/cond.Water in the fuel.Bad coil.If it's just been rebuilt and you replaced the timing chain and gears(you did change them didn't you) Then it's probably something simple.Jerry

hi guys
thanks for all the help when i rebuilt the motor i did everything timming belt and all . like you said bad gas .i told my son to drain the tank and put in new come to find out he never did so its old gas and we dont know how old it is .its time for me to drain the tank .its the only way to know its been done!my son has to many things on his mind GIRLS :confused:

hi guys just wanted to let you know that it was timming we drained all the gas and no luck! so i looked at timing and the disturber was not turning .when i took it out the pin that holds the gear on the shaft had slid out to one side and it was just sliding .we put it back together and she fired rite up thanks for the help

Cause you drained the tank don't mean your out of the woods.

Keep cleaning the filters. About 3-4 tank fulls till they stay clean. Have a fuel water separator?

Oh don't forget about the fuel pickup tube in the tank. Has a screen on it.
