I have a 1977 evinrude 75 hp 3 cylinder outboard. How could I check to see if water gets in the engine-cylinders? I changed the water pumpkit. It idles rough. If I determine that water gets into one of the cylinders what could the cause be? How hard or expensive would it be to fix? compression test is 115 -115-110 on the cylinders.

you could easily pull the head and inspect the cylinders.... if water could get in then air could get out and i would think that it is unlikely that your compression would be that high. there are a lot of other explanations for a rough idle.. im not wure where to start looking. could be spark, fuel, timing, or other problems... maybe someone has troubleshooting guide for this problem??? might try searching "rough idle"...

we need more info/history. has it run good all season, or is it fresh out of long term storage? what work has been done on it lately (if any)?

Ran good had it on the water for 4 hrs pulling tube,
Did Seafoam treatment got a lot of crap coming out of the exhaust.
Ran rough after that. Cleaned carburators. Tried again still not good.

Changed waterpump and added thermostat which was missing.
Still no result. Seems to be a grey milkey solution on lower cilinder.

always new plugs after a decarb. it is extremely hard on plugs. that compression does not look like you have any problems. the way to tell if you are getting water into the cylinder, is the plugs will look like they have been steam clean.

Replaced plugs, If the plugs look steam cleaned how could the water get in if compression test is good?
