I am new to the forum, though I have been reading the various posts for a month or two. I had a 70hp Johnson on my Whaler, but while running it last Thursday, it ceased moving forward, though the engine ran fine. I pulled the boat, and did some rudimentary checks. Finally, I tried to drain the lower unit...nothing. I flushed it with gas, and the only things that came out were gear teeth and metal filings. After a little investigation, I found that whoever changed the lower unit last had switched drain and fill plugs, not realizing that the nylon washer stayed on the drain plug, while the fill washer stayed in the lower unit. Over time, all of the oil drained out (three weeks), and the rest was history.

I had the Force 85hp on a pallet in the carport, and started switching them out on Friday morning. By Sunday morn, I had the wiring, controls, etc. hooked up, and ran the engine with muffs...it seemed to be missing, but I put it in the water anyway. After idling around the dock, working the gears, etc., I started to push it. It took off with a lot more power than the old motor, and I was very happy for 200 yards, when it died. I checked the fuel line bulb and found it soft, then it dawned on me that I had closed the vent after I stopped to fill the tank at the gas station. I opened the vent, the boat took off and ran fast for 100 yards, then died.

Thereafter the motor would bog when I started inching up the throttle. I sounds like it's missing on one cylinder, though it does backfire occasionally. I am going to work on it tomorrow, but could use some suggestions about where to start. I am replacing the fuel hose and pump bulb first thing, the checking for iginition from all three coils.

The motor has what appear to be three CD units, though I know this is not what my Seloc manual says. Two of the units are royal blue, and the other is black. The manual is very short of detail on this engine, and I had to sort out the wiring on my own, as the wiring charts in the book did not correspond to anything I had on the motor.

The fuel is new, the oil is in the mix, I ran the Johnson off the same tank for hours, and never had a problem. The Force engine sat for some unknown amount of time, but looks new under the hood. Pumps water, starts easily, and went well for a brief amount of time.

All suggestions are welcome. I would include the model number, but the plat is bleached out to the point where I cannot read the numbers. It does appear to have the type three ignition, however.

Re: 85hp Force ca. 1989

Just an update on the problem motor. In preparation for rebuilding the fuel pump, carburetors, and checking out the reed valves to find the cause of the backfiring out the exhaust and the poor performance, I ordered all of the gaskets, valves, needles, etc. from fuel pump to reed valve holders. When they arrived on Friday, I started the tear down.

In order to follow a logical process in the hope that I could identify the specific cause of the problem, I decided to start at the fuel input and work downstream from there.

First off, I pulled the fuel hose off of the sediment bowl input on the fuel pump. I then pumped the ball on the fuel line to check for flow...nothing. I knew the fuel line had flowed with the old Johnson motor. All I had done was cut off the Johnson fitting at the motor end and put on a new Mercury fitting to match the one installed on the Force when I bought it.

The Merc fitting on the motor was attached to 2 feet of fuel line so the fitting was outside of the motor housing, and the line ran into the housing to the fuel pump. I pulled off the Merc fitting, and tried to blow through the 2 foot hose...nothing. To check if any air was coming through, I put the end of the hose to my left ear and gave a hard puff...gas in my ear and left eye.

After washing my head, left ear, and left eye in the kitchen sink, it was back to the motor. I previously had pulled the male part of the Merc disconnect from the 2 foot hose, so I pulled the female part off the supply line, mated the two, and tried to blow through them (taking care not have any sensitive body parts in the line of fire)...nothing. I could not get air to pass through the joined male and female connectors under any circumstance.

After that epiphany, I ran the fuel line directily from the tank through the lower pan to the fuel pump, hooked it up, and it ran great on the muff. I set the idle jets at 1 1/4 turns out (rich, I know, but I would rather be rich than motor broke). The motor was missing a bit, but no backfires and it started at the touch of the switch.

Yesterday, after doing some electrical wiring and pulling out all the old Johnson controls, I put the Whaler in the water. It started up immediately, and idled for 10 minutes while I fought to push the boat back in the water (the boat ramp has a slope of one degree...to get the motor deep enough to start, I was sitting in water in the driver's seat of the Jeep.

Took it through the draw bridge and out of the no wake zone, and opened it up. No stumbling, hesitation, backfiring...just pure speed. I don't have a speedo, but I would bet I was pushing 40 on the 17' Whaler with just me in the boat.

When I got back to the dock, my friends had arrived for dinner, so I took two of them for a quick run...no problems. Later on, I took four plus me for a long run and a quick stop at the bar...about 850 pounds of live weight, and the boat jumped up on plane and ran fast.

My only problem was a surging that started occuring as we ran with the full load. Outa gas in the reserve tank, but the big tank was full, and when I switched, no problem.

Upon returning to the dock and seeing all passengers off safely, I leaned over the side to grab a line, fell in the water, smoked my Iphone, digital camera, passport, Daytimer, and everything else not waterproof that was in my pockets. Returned to the house, slipped twice on the steps, and decided to retire for the night...my friends stayed, cooked dinner, had a good time, and left food for me in the fridge.

Well, I wanted a new 3G Iphone, there are only 20 days left in the August Daytimer, and I had planned on buying a waterproof and shockproof camera (the previous one having succumbed when I was run down by a motorbike crossing the street in Tirane), so all in all, having the motor up and running seems like a fair trade.

I think I broke my toe, though.
