im not a new boater, but this is my first i/o, the outboard kind of took care of it self in this regard. so i was wondering, should i drain the cooling system after each use to minimize corrosion? is this a common practice?
thanks for any opinions, 305 alpha1 .

No, you don't need to drain the engine every time. Just be sure to drain it before the first freeze.

Pull your transom plug out of the boat to drain the bilge every time.

No need to pull the transome plug if she don't leak.;)

Eh, mine has sat outside for years with just a cover on it.....a good, custom made cover that fits right. Never had so much as a cup of water leak in the boat.

My cover tends to leak when we get torrential storms out here.

That's cool that you don't ever have to worry about any sort of water ever getting into your boat...

I'm assuming that everybody comes out of the water perfectly dry, and never drips anything into your boat either, right?

Have you considered welding your plug into place? :D

No wind either, eh? I have yet to see a trailer cover that doesn't creep from wind unless it's snapped on all around, or the old style that uses 200 bungie straps.

There's no reason to leave the plug in when the boat's outside, you're just asking for trouble. Covers rip, clips break, seams come apart. Playing the odds just isn't worth it.

Pull the plug unless it's in the water!

If you boat in salt water, you always want to run the motor on muffs after youuse it to get rid of the salt in the engine and manifolds.

I always pull my transom plugs and store it out. Had a bad experience when my bilge pump didn't turn on after a rain because my battery was turned off.

My cover does snap all the way around and fits tight as a drum. The boat sits next to my house, I see it everyday when I go outside. If the cover were off, I'd notice it............Note: It has been under a carport since 2001. But from 1985 to 2001, it sat outside in the open.

One reason I always have left the plug in is because it closes up the tunnel that mice could use to get in.:)

If nothing else, I have learned from this thread that if I need another cover, it will come from the same place as my current one since others blow off, leak or whatever else. My current cover is 12 years old and was about 500 bucks when it was made. It's getting a little faded now and needs the binding on the edges replaced. I thought about getting a semi-custom to replace it for way less bucks since my boat is now pretty old. However, it looks like getting a good fitting custom made cover may be worth the extra bucks.

boat sored dry with transom plug out, but its new this year and i plan on keeping it for ever, so it occured to me the manifolds and pumps may last longer if they were drained all the time. no salt water.

Na you got good sound advise run it on the muffs everytime you come out of the water.

I pull my plug.

Fresh water lakes still have stuff in them.
