This sort of accident happens in a lot of places more than people realize. I agree that boating at night is fine, as long as you know what you are doing and where you are, but I don't agree with the family member who posted at the bottom of the first article - this accident absolutely was preventable.
I had to go find a guy at 4 in the morning, a couple of months ago. He did essentially the same thing, but in a winding bayou rather than a river. He was lucky enough not to flip the boat or become ejected from it, though. When I found him, he was standing in his boat after being "chewed alive" by mosquitos and horse flies for most of the night. His 22 foot bay boat was completely out of water, with the rearmost 2 feet hanging out over the waterway. What he eventually admitted is that he didn't know the area well and was running the boat at high speed, in the dark.
