Hello,I have a 1996 bayliner with a 120hp force I have a big problem with the starter or at least i think its the starter. When i go to start the engine it turns over very slow and the positive wire gets red hot so hot it melted the battery terminal and wire so i went out and got a new battery and replaced the burnt wire and the same problem. I took the plugs out and turned the engine over the starter and engine were spinning fine. put the plugs back in tried to start maybe it turned over once sounds like there not enough power to turn the flywheel also the battery was fully charged. Can it be the STARTER? Please help, Thank You

Re: Starter

You can check the wiring and make sure all connections are tight and clean. That starter probably uses a body ground so no wire to ground on it. I would bet the starter is shot. Try getting a new one on ebay or maybe ebasic.

Re: Starter

You have bad wiring.

Go to the Engine FAQs and do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

Re: Starter Problems "Please help"

I have a similar problem with my 1988 50hp Force motor. When I connect the battery the battery terminals will start to get hot and the starter begins to move slowly without the key even engaged, eventually it will try to turn over full force. I figured maybe the ignition switch had shorted and replaced it. I figured it was simple and cheap but it still does it.

Could this be a bad solenoid? I checked wiring everywhere I can see and don't see any obvious bad connections but maybe it is....

Pull the plugs and check the condition./Try to turn it over without the plugs.
Do a comp check. If you haven't bought a new starter take the brushes apart and see how much crap is built up in the bottom.Clean it out and re-assemble.It might work for a while.Almost any starter repair facility can rebuild it.
I bought the parts and haven't had to pay anyone to rebuild mine in years.Jerry
