Well, I took the Evinrude to my shop guy last week for the impeller kit
replacement. He called me at 4pm yesterday and said I got good news and I got bad news. Good news your 4hp Johnson is a great runing machine, bad news your Evinrude needs a water tube, it's cracked and looks to have been cracked for awhile. He said to him it's not worth fixin it's a special order part that costs $150 :( . What to do ? the motor itself runs awesome starts first pull. Are these copper tubes ?? Can they be soldered or coated with something to seal them? This breaks my heart, I want her runin but don't want to spend that kind of $$$. Any Suggestions out there for me. I gotta go see him this morning,he wants to show me the problem, is it possible to re-sleeve these ???

Sounds like the mech knows you like those motors and sees an opportunity to make a boat payment. If it's a stock 55 7.5 Evinrude, it has copper water tubes...find the right diameter, cut it to length, install and you're in business again. Some of those tubes are just straight and plug in to a rubber grommet top and bottom. Others, like on the 3 hp Lightwin and Ducktwin have a bend at the top and a hard connection to the powerhead. I would figure out which you have and then put a free Wanted ad on the classifieds at www.aomci.org
Be prepared to NOT pay $150 for a water tube though.

there are tons of these motors out there, post an ad on the amoci.org classifieds or go to your local marine salvage yard. you might also ask for a parts motor and transplant your good running head to the new leg. It is possible to slide a hose over the tube, but you are better off getting a replacement. fixing it right will leave you with no worries once on the water.

I would measure the size of the tube, it is probably 1/4" or 5/16" inside diameter. Go to any plumbing shop, and get the tube in soft copper. I could make that tube while you wait.

Solder or braze (overkill) is an option depending on where the break is or as been mentioned, just make a new one. Either way , no big deal. Spending 150.00 is nuts. I would really like to see a pic of the crack.

The top of this tube is a compression fitting, it does not fit into a rubber grommet. At the top of the exhaust housing you will find a brass gland nut. Use heat, or penetrating oil, or both to loosen this, then pull the tube out. Around the tube will be a brass ring that will be stuck in place. Who ever has the soft copper tube will have that ring, this is a common fitting. Total cost will probably be $2, or $3. To bend the tube without kinking, put the tube inside a common screen door spring. I doubt if this will be needed.

Re: Got bad news on '55 7.5 Evinrude... I NEED ADVICE !!

I wish I knew the names of the parts but I'll try my best to explain what he showed me yesterday.

the steel shaft that rides another shaft has been slammed together for so long that {without a seal} it's got deep gouges in it and the plate that bolts
{housing}water pump is cracked in several different directions.:eek:The seal had worn out and dicintergrated causing the shafts to rub on eachother. He therefore told me to search for a lower unit {the parts if new he said would cost $300 !!!! I told him I want to keep the motor runing because it runs awesome starts first pull and runs great, I asked him if he knew of any salvage places and he did'nt really wanna hear the word salvage,I told him I want it runing but I don't wanna pay that price,so he told me to look around and see if I can find one, if not he would put it back together and lube it all up and it will be ready for storage for me. Does anyone here have anything
that will rescue me???? Or maybe know of someone that can help me out???

I've found 2 or 3 used lower units for around 65 to 75 dollars on ebay that were fixable. I'd go that route. That's definitely a motor worth fixing.
Good luck,
JBJ

Re: Got bad news on '55 7.5 Evinrude... I NEED ADVICE !!

Does anyone here know exactly what years are compatable with my motor as
well as hp?? I have a couple of folks e-mailing me saying that a '54-'58 Johnson & Evinrude
5.5hp & 10hp are interchangable parts, for my 7.5 hp. Is this true ??

Re: Got bad news on '55 7.5 Evinrude... I NEED ADVICE !!

Short answer 1954-64 5.5 - 7.5 hp lower unit assembly will work. Make sure it comes with the prop if you buy a 1956-64 or else you will have to modify the prop or lower unit.

1954-55 5.5-7.5 hp are identical. 1956-64 5.5 hp and 1956-58 7.5 hp lower unit assembly will work, but they have a different clutch dog, prop shaft and prop than your motor. The 1958-63 10 hp shares gears, clutch dog and housing, but nothing else. You don't want a 10 hp lower unit. The gear set, clutch dog and prop shaft can be used from a 1965-7? 6 hp, but the lower unit and shift rod are slightly different.

Re: Got bad news on '55 7.5 Evinrude... I NEED ADVICE !!

The 1956 will work. Your prop will rub on the housing so you'll have to modify the prop or housing unless you get the 1956 prop with it.

I've bought a couple lower units on eBay and they were about $20 to ship. Personally, I think $150 is high. You can get one from a boneyard for that. Heck, I've never paid more than $70 for an entire 7.5 hp. I frequently see them for as little as $40 (price of the coils).

What exactly is wrong with yours? Unfortunately, I can't figure out what's wrong by your discription. It sounds to me like your bearing housing under the water pump is cracked, which is usually caused by broken shock absorber or by trying to remove the driveshaft seal. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the parts manual to a 1956 Evinrude 5.5 hp. Then you can tell us what parts are shot.
