Starter winds but doesn't catch

Just put in a new anti-siphon valve and I'm trying to start the engine and I just hear the high wind of the starter. RPM gauge flys up but I can tell the starter is not engaging the engine because there's no 'shake' like when the cylinders start rocking and rolling. I play with the key giving the starter short bursts and I can get her to catch about every 5 tries in which she starts up no problem. Do I have a bad solenoid, stripped starter gear or is it something worse?

I want to pull the starter out and all the manuals say is 'remove starter mounting bolts'. Everything is pretty black and nasty down there. Can anyone gt me a clue as to where they are located?

Thanks again...

You should post what engine/outdrive combo you have and serial # if you have it handy.

Sounds like a bad bendix (or whatever you call it) on the starter.

Ayuh,.....

There's 2, from the bottom rear, going straight Up....
They take a 9/16" Thinwall socket....

There are 2 bolts. 9/16 located under the starter one long one short. Want to see them stick a mirror under the starter.

Disconnect the battery before you start messing with the starter first. When you go to install the new starter make sure you use the bracket.

If it is the old style and you install a new style than you will have to fabricate a bracket. No big deal. Hook back up the battery. And your good to go.

Good luck

anybody have a link where I'd find one to buy? Also, are there starters for marine specific applications like the alternator I put in last year?

Easy in and out. Toughest part was the wiring. $95 locally. The gear was stripped all to hell. Flywheel looked good though. New starter works like a charm. Nice to be back on the water again. Nailed a 26" flounder on Monday.

Please don't reply to old threads. You don't even have the same engine and the starter isn't installed the same way.
