hi
Just bought an evinrude 9.5 hp (9023c) outboard
which is longshaft
I was told that my boat should really have a shortshaft motor on it, so i was wondering if it is possible to convert it to shortshaft
And what parts if any would i need to purchase to do the job.
I am new to boating so any info would be greatly appreciated
thanx

for less hassle, use a mini jacker or a transom elevator. or build your own.

The motor can be shortened, but it is not one of the easier ones to do. You will need:
A 309639 short drive shaft
A 309582 short lower shift rod, or cut exactly 5" off the old one and file a notch with a chainsaw file. If you replace it you will need gearcase seals.
A 309607 seal, goes on top of the water pump
A 309583 support washer, goes inside the 309607 seal
A Short water tube. You don'
t even want to think about replacing it. You can probably get up in there to cut it off with a Dremel or something.

I have both a short and long gearcases that are interchangeable for my 9.5 motors. Some of the factory setups had longer water tubes, some had a 5" extension.

If you have both set up, it only takes removing four bolts to switch; look for a complete used short gearcase. Should run about $100.
