Hello,

Could someone please advise me on whether or not Sierra makes a replacment forward gear or gear set. If not, I could use some help finding out who does and what the part # would be. There is a a type of washer that locks the pinion through a notch in the shaft and I require those two pieces as well. Would Napa /Sierra make a seal kit for the Skeg plate?

Thank You to whom ever would be so kind to share their knowledge.

As far as I know, Sierra or anyone else doesn't make gear sets or clutch dogs for them. They do, however, make seal kits for the whole lower unit. If your gear set and clutch dog is bad, you'd probably get the better deal buying a used lower unit on ebay. You can also get a used one from someone like laingsoutboards.com which is an outboard salvage yard but they are kind of high in my opinion. They come up on ebay pretty often and I'd get one there but be careful that you get one that has good gears or you'll be in the same shape as you are now (ask questions and check feedback).
Good luck,

I don't know if the gear set is still available, but it would cost around $500 so you'd be crazy to buy one. The 1954-55 have a different prop shaft and clutch dog than the 1956-64. You can use the entire lower unit assembly from a 1954-64 5.5-7.5 hp Johnson/Evinrude. If you get just the gear set from a 1956-64, you will also need the clutch dog, propshaft and prop with it. You can use the gear set, clutch dog and prop from a 1964-197? 6 hp as well, but I can't say for sure what years will match. I can tell you I swapped the gears in a 1972 6 hp with those of a 1955 7.5 hp and they worked fine.

I've just recently found a CD14 for the purpose of exchanging the bottom end w/ CD-11. After reading the above it would seem that I have the option of swapping the lower units or swapping the complete contents off the 14 to the 11. I was very pleased to receive the above advice and I thank you for your time.
