Re: 1992 Black Max 150 shifting problem
I have a 1992 Mercury Black Max 150 that jerks and makes a thump, thump, thump noise when I shift from neutral to forward idle. I can quickly throw the shifter farther forward and then pull back to idle and the noise and jerking stops. If I shift from neutral and gun the boat out of the hole then there is no isuue . It seems like it's not fully engaging unless I push the throttle past idle. Does anyone know if this is most likely a linkage adjustment issue, or is it the foot wearing out? If it's linkage then would the adjusment need to be done in the control box or somewhere on the motor?
The cables, both throttle and shift, are adjusted at the motor. The adjustment is critical.
There's a cylinder pivot point on each cable that adjusts it's length. For the throttle, find the position for that that holds the idle stop screw lightly against the stop. For the shifter, take the cable off, find the neutral detent in the shift linkage in the motor, then find the position for the adjuster that lets the cable drop freely on with no tension either way. Both adjustments are with the fast idle lever down, and the shift/throttle lever straight up.
If the adjustments wander or seem sloppy, the control box is worn. It's all cams and rollers.
hope it helps]
