Trailer Axle Question

I have a 19 ft MACH I with a 5.0L I/O that is on a single axle Shorelander trailer. The boat and moter weigh about 2600 lbs. As far as I can tell it was set up this way on the trailer from the dealer. I would like to have a dual axle trailer. Can I add another axle or replace the single with a dula setup. Or would I be better off looking for a junk boat in a dual axle trailer? Any opinions from the experts.

Thanks in advance, Danny

Re: Trailer Axle Question

depend on how your trailer is set up. you are correct you are border line, for a single axle. you also need trailer brakes.

Re: Trailer Axle Question

You probably have a 3500 lb axle. That gives you about 1200 lb for the trailer and gear, assuming 300 lb of tongue weight and assuming your tires are rated for at least 1750 lb each. Not a huge margin, but probably enough.

I second the brake suggestion. They will be legally required at that weight in most jurisdictions and will be essential for safe towing unless you have a huge tow vehicle.

I do have trailer brakes, but am concerned about over loading the trailer.

Thanks,

Re: Trailer Axle Question

If you are just worried about overloading the axle, you can buy 5,200 lb axles for a single axle trailer. I built a single axle utility trailer with an axle ordered here:

You would definitely want brakes. You can order those from the same place too.

edit: Forgot. You will also need to upgrade your wheels/tires
