Does the overheat alarm come on?

How do you know it isn't pumping when it is running?

Re: HELP!!! 79 Johnson 35hp water problem

The over heat alarm I believe is inside the control box but if it has been rewired hard to tell if it is working.

The only thing I can think of is that the pick up tube isn't aligned right other than that it makes no sense to me, it should be the other way around, when the motor is cranking it is going at its slowest speed so pumps the least.

Without being able to see the motor it is hard to tell what is wrong.

Got me stumped, hang tight for one of the pros, maybe they will have an idea.

I think you may have solved your peoblem,,, are you running this on muffs?

If so the water pump on these engine isn't self priming, it needs to be submerged to pump.

Mine pumps like a champ on the water but it is hard to get it to on muffs in the drive.

If you haven't yet get it in the water and see what it does.
