87 omc 5.7 cobra, had an issue where it shifted fine forward and reverse, but the reverse cutout stayed engaged. couldnt drive it any longer so I took it to the mechanic at the marina and told them to look at it when they put it away.

was going to take the boat out today but I figured I'd check it just in case. of coure it still sticks on the cutout switch. last time out I could maniupilate it where it went backwards in idle only whereas I had no reverse at all before.

Today I pulled all the cables off, shifter handle apart and lubed everything, took the drive off and the cable to the drive is not the smoothest, probably needs replacing soon, but the shifter rod in the drive is hard to move. I can force it in gear but it's hard. anything servicabe in there?

how would you know if it takes 2 pounds to move the shift cable? I cleaned it up and lubed it with dry graphite lubricant, seems a lot lighter, but how would I know if it's good or not?

Re: shifter in drive is hard to move

so cleaned the shifter cable, greased her up, adjusted the cables, shift beautiful, 1 finger fwd to rwd. I was hesitant to adjust the overstroke switch, as there was very little to adjust I'm nervous as to why it was 5/8 inch away from the position it is in right now.

gonna go out and try it again with the earmuffs on.

NOOB question, when replacing shifter cables, do you just replace the core, or the outside sheating as well?

Welcome aboard, and good luck.
