I was just curious why we on our web site iboats have a motors for sale or anything boat related for sale forum ??? It would make sense right ? Just curious, maybe I'm wrong. I don't want to step over any bounds by asking this or am not trying to do this,I just thought I'd ask.

might be because the fourum is hosted by iboats, who sells engines and parts and those types of things...
if i had a new/reman auto parts business, i wouldnt host a forum where you could find a bunch of used parts for less $$... would u?

Re: Why don't "WE" on iboats have our own....

My (unedcuated) guess is that management is probably getting closer to that. Especially with the new tie-in to AMTEC. I know they have the "commercial" area but I'd think that as smart as management is that one day they'll realize what they're missing. Lots of possibilities.

That being said "we" have to understand that iboats makes money from selling new items. Some / a few may be the same or similar to what "we" may have. What management needs to realize is that if it's something "we" have it probably isn't new so in reality it's not the same as what iboats has. If "we" wanted to sell something new that is the same as what iboats offers, it'd have to list in the "commercial" area.

Like I say - lots of possibilities. They'll figure it out.

no guess not, but what about the guys who wanna keep the old motors goin,
that they can't supply parts to, I guess thats what I mean, the old motors & parts that seem to be" out of stock",the ones they could'nt make money on anyways.I'll just shut up, I don't wanna get in trouble.

I don't think you'll get in trouble at all. Unless I missed my guess all together, I believe Bruno does pay attention to these threads, even if a moderator calls his attention to it. Iboats didn't get to where it is today by not considering new options.

After all, the prop forum was a suggestion from a contributor.

i'm moving this to dockside chat. it has been considered many times, and still not totally out of the picture. logisitics is the main problem. years ago the THRIFTY'S was started and still exists. but no one used it. http://www.iboats.com/boats/marine--1/thrifties--107/

at present if you see someone, who states "where can if find xxxx?". you are more than welcome to send them a PM. and say "i got it." you negotiations are not to be done in the forum, but thur PM, or Email. that is the best we can do, at the present time.

if i had a new/reman auto parts business said:
Maybe you would. Those people who have a few "used" parts here and there are not really a main competitor. And it would be a pretty easy way to keep an eye on the market. Think about all the problems there are with used parts and there is no warranty. Sometimes it's better to buy new / reman with a warranty. And if there are delays or rip-offs you have to recourse.

A lot of times used isn't that great of a deal. If the buyer figures that for a few $$ more he can get the same part with a warranty, he'll probably get the new one.

I've bought high end rods and reels on other sites. I've passed an many more because for just a few $$ more I can get a new one. Sometimes used isn't that good of a deal. But regardless it brings folks to the site.

Re: Why don't "WE" on iboats have our own....

Actually, the PM "system" works very well. It just has to be used on a case by case basis. As long as any offers to buy or sell are made in private there are no rules broken and we moderators aren't constantly trying to keep scams and commercial operations out of the system. That was a problem with the Thrifties early on.

We see many posts daily asking for advice where to get something. A PM saying that you have one and are willing to sell it opens the door to private negotiations and a private transaction. I have used it, DHadley has used it and many others here use it regularly. I have only been scammed once.

Finding a buyer for something you want to sell is a little more difficult, but not impossible. As long as your post does not offer to sell or ask if anyone is interested in your item you are okay.

Many posters ask where they ought to advertise stuff, craigslist, eBay, etc.? That often triggers a PM.

It's not a classified ad system and it takes a while to learn how to use it without breaking the rules, but it does work. Give it a try. :)

Bottom line is this site does not want a classified area. Don't know why??? As Jb said plenty of other sites for selling and buying. Most boating and fishing forums have them. I think I-boats could use one, Pretty simple concept,, but hey thats life.

Perhaps a sticky titled "the junkyard" or something like that where folks can post stuff they have that they'd be willing to sell or trade for something they want?? Vintage stuff that's no longer available from anywhere. Controls, 50 year old Shrouds, lower end units and such.

Imagine somebody willing to buy a few hundred bucks worth of parts from iboats but they just can't find that crucial piece to get the project started.;)

What about a " Looking For " forum. If you are looking for a part post it in the forum and wait for a pm. The people with stuff to sell could scan it and and contact the buyer using a PM. Threads would be locked so no public responses in the thread keeping everything private. That would keep the scammers down and at the same time help the iboaters find pieces they need.
