My buddy has an older 50hp that has never run right. It will idle fairly decent, and run good at high revs in neutral. When put in gear does not seem to run properly. While in the lake the other day we adjusted the air fuel mixture screws on both carburetors with no change. However while running in gear it all of a sudden started to try and run proper only to die (ran out of gas) so if it ran good right when the gas was going out it seems that it is receiving to much fuel. A month ago had the carbs rebuilt in a shop but that didn?t change anything. It is never stored with fuel in it. How can we decrease the amount of fuel to see if that is our problem.

Re: older 50hp

If you could tell us the model number of your outboard, we might be able to pin down the problem a lot easier. Older could be the 1980s or the 1950s. Big differences, there.

I don't know what you were adjusting, but there are no fuel/air adjustments on those carburetors. If you were messing with the screws right above the main air intakes, those are not adjustments, but plugs. They are supposed to be screwed all the way in tight.

Your motor is running on one cylinder.

You could have a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm, which would cause extra fuel to be dumped into the crankcase on the cylinder to which it is mounted.
