Re: Radial or Bias tire for a tandem trailer

I would definitely choose the radial. I really can't think of why the initial cost advantage of bias ply tires could outweigh the radials.

1. Radials definitely have longer life.

2. Due to the construction, radials usually have fewer flats.

3. Radials have better traction. Not that big of an advantage for a trailer, but still an asset.

4. Lower rolling resistance equals better fuel mileage.

5. Lower center of gravity for a radial tire.

6. Improved feel, better sense of what is happening behind you.

7. Mother in laws family name is Michelin. :) Unfortunately not related to the tire. :(

I think either are fine as long as you match and are load rated.

My tire dealer says they would have to order bias tires for trailers. Go radial and be done with it (is what they say).

To me it matters not as long as they are matched and trailer rated, also suitable for the load you are pulling.

I just put new tires on my trailer and addressed this question to my tire dealer. He said to go radial if you put a lot of miles on them, but to go bias if not. He went on to say that most trailer tires he changes out are being replaced due to age and not wear.

For me, I've only ever had bias ply trailer tires.... I don't even know if there are 8" and 12x4.8" equivalent sizes available in a radial construction.

Just make sure that the tire is rated for trailer use.
ST (special trailer)
P (passenger).
