merc 40hp pinging rattle

Im not familiar with 2 strokes....can a 2 stroke exhibit the same pinging symptoms as a 4 stroke with advanced timing ping

it happens just like a 350 chev ....under a load with heavy acceleration and is less predominant as you back off the throttle.....sounds the same and responds the same

or am I hearing upper bearings???

this is a 1974 40hp 402 model

Have you checked the timing?
Have you tried high test?
