I've been having a problem with the motor not shifting properly and it so far has always turned out to be the cable coming loose at one end or the other (Morse system).

This morning it happened again and this time it is not the cable. I disconnected and tried shifting manually and no success either for forward or reverse.

Any thoughts about what I might be into here - is it possible that the shift rod has just detached, or is it likely something more serious and if so what are the next steps.

Thanks

Re: Shifter problems 1980 70HP Evinrude

Didn't get a chance to look at this as it's been pouring rain here and I had to fix a jammed bilge pump on the other boat.

Checked the shifter rod and it was fine - very smooth actually - then a horrible thought crossed my mind - raised the motor up and sure enough, no prop. Put on snorkeling gear and found prop, but the thrust washer etc. are buried in the silt in the bottom of the lake and will never be able to find, so went to local repair shop and obtained replacements.

All is fine now.

New step to add to checklist - check prop!

File this under ID10T errors.
